Bondalem is a coastal village in Tejakula District, Buleleng Regency, on Bali's north coast. It is about 2.5 to 3 hours from the airport and 1.5 hours from Ubud. The beach is black sand, the water is calm, and the reef starts close to shore. Compared with the busy south coast, Bondalem moves at a much slower pace.

Bondalem is part of the Buleleng Timur Marine Conservation Area, with about 1,000 hectares of protected reef along this coast. The community manages the reef through Bondalem Eco Dive, a village-owned enterprise that runs diving and snorkeling trips, coral restoration programs, and an SSI-certified dive centre. This isn't a mass-tourism stop — the focus is on marine conservation, quiet beaches, and local hospitality.

Snorkeling and diving

Bondalem's reef has healthy coral cover and a wide variety of fish. The water is generally calm because this north coast faces the Bali Sea rather than the open Indian Ocean, making conditions good most of the year. Snorkeling is possible directly from the beach, and several dive sites are a short boat ride away.

Bondalem has an underwater museum with hexadome structures on the seabed to create new coral habitat. The site also tells the story of the village during the colonial period, making it one of Bali's more unusual dive destinations.

Dolphin tours

Dolphin tours leave Bondalem beach around 5:30 AM, heading east along the coast toward deeper water where spinner and bottlenose dolphins feed. The trip lasts about two hours and costs around Rp 560,000 per boat for two people. Sightings aren't guaranteed, but the sunrise over the Bali Sea makes the early start worthwhile.

Bondalem Beach Club

Bondalem Beach Club is a hotel-affiliated beachfront facility with an infinity pool, day beds, and a restaurant. There is no entry fee or minimum spend for outside visitors. You can walk in, rent a towel for the pool, and order food or drinks. It's open daily from 8:00 AM to 10:00 PM.

Best time to visit

The dry season from April to October brings the calmest sea conditions and the clearest visibility for snorkeling and diving. Dolphin sightings are most reliable between May and September. The north coast is slightly cooler than the south, and the beach faces away from prevailing winds, so the water often stays flat when the south coast turns choppy.

The road down to Bondalem from the main Singaraja-Amlapura highway has some rough sections. A scooter is fine for confident riders, but a car with decent ground clearance is more comfortable. Allow extra time for the last few kilometres.

How to get there

Ubud1.5 hoursVia Kintamani and the north coast road

A private driver or rental scooter are the standard transport options. Ride-sharing apps have limited coverage in Tejakula, so arrange transport in advance. Bondalem pairs well with Lovina or Amed as part of a multi-day north coast trip.
