Nusa Dua
A gated resort area on the southern coast with white sand beaches, calm water, and five-star hotels.
Nusa Dua is on the southeastern coast of the Bukit Peninsula, 15 to 25 minutes from Ngurah Rai Airport. The Bali Tourism Development Corporation built it in the 1970s as a gated luxury resort enclave. The roads are wide, the gardens are kept tidy, and the white-sand beaches have calm, reef-protected water. It feels quite different from Canggu or Kuta, even though it is on the same island.
The entire complex sits behind security gates. Inside are landscaped promenades, five-star hotels, smooth roads, and a beach that is cleaned every day. Outside the gates is regular Bali. For some travellers, that contrast is exactly the appeal. For others, it can feel too separated. The real question is whether Nusa Dua fits your travel style. It does calm, clean, and convenient better than almost anywhere else on the island.

Beaches
The beaches are Nusa Dua's strongest feature. Mengiat Beach in the north and Geger Beach in the south both offer white sand, calm turquoise water protected by offshore reefs, and flat access with no cliff stairs or strong currents. Both are free to access, and you do not need to be a hotel guest to walk the sand or swim. A paved promenade runs the full length of the beach and is accessible to prams and wheelchairs.
| Beach | Location | Best for | Fee |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mengiat Beach | Central ITDC area | Swimming, families, resort frontage | Free (parking Rp 5,000-10,000) |
| Geger Beach | Southern end | Quieter, local warungs, laid-back | Free (parking Rp 5,000-10,000) |
Attractions within Nusa Dua
Most of what to do in Nusa Dua is inside the ITDC complex, within walking distance or a short drive from the resorts.
| Attraction | Entry fee (foreign) | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Waterblow | Rp 25,000 | Natural blowhole, best at high tide with swell |
| Museum Pasifika | Rp 100,000-150,000 | Art museum with Pacific and Asian works |
| Devdan Show | Rp 350,000-500,000 | Cultural dance performance at Nusa Dua Theatre |
| Bali Collection | Free | Open-air shopping and dining complex |
| Bali National Golf Club | Green fees vary | 18-hole course with ocean views |
Waterblow has no separate gate, but the site is inside the Badung retribution zone, so foreign visitors pay a Rp 25,000 fee. It is worth a short visit on a day with strong swell.
Watersports at Tanjung Benoa
Just north of the ITDC complex, Tanjung Benoa is Bali's watersports strip. Jet skis, parasailing, banana boats, glass-bottom boats, and sea walking are all available. Prices can vary widely and are usually negotiable. Expect around Rp 150,000 to Rp 250,000 for a banana boat ride and Rp 500,000 to Rp 1,000,000 for a package with multiple activities.
Where to eat
Dining in Nusa Dua splits into three categories: resort restaurants, Bali Collection, and local warungs outside the gates. Resort restaurants are convenient but premium-priced; a simple lunch by the pool can cost Rp 300,000 to Rp 600,000 per person. Bali Collection offers mid-range options for lower prices. For the best value, head to warungs at Geger Beach or across the road in Tanjung Benoa, where a nasi campur costs about Rp 45,000.
Best time to visit
The dry season from April to October gives the most consistent conditions. Reef protection keeps Nusa Dua's water calmer than west-coast beaches even during the wet season, but November to January can bring seaweed on the reef flat and murkier water. The best months are May, June, September, and October, when the weather is good and crowds are thinner than in July and August.
Nusa Dua faces east, so sunrise is the best time on the beach before the heat builds. By early afternoon the resort buildings cast shade and the sun moves behind the property line.
How to get there
| From | Drive time | Cost (approx.) |
|---|---|---|
| Ngurah Rai Airport | 15 to 25 minutes | Rp 100,000-150,000 by taxi |
| Kuta | 20 to 30 minutes | Rp 150,000-200,000 by taxi |
| Seminyak | 30 to 40 minutes | Rp 200,000-250,000 by taxi |
| Ubud | 1 to 1.5 hours | Rp 350,000-550,000 full-day driver |
Ride-hailing apps like Grab and Gojek work in the area but pickups inside the ITDC complex can be complicated because resort security sometimes restricts app-based drivers. Hotel taxis or pre-arranged transfers are more reliable inside the gates.
